Incoming 5th Grade Summer Assignments 2011
As part of your preparation for fifth grade, we are asking you to read two books and to read from the Holy Bible. We are also asking that you work to maintain your math skills. You will be asked to prepare a small project to reflect your Scripture reading. For the social studies book, you will be given a choice of projects (see below). For language arts, you will be given a written assessment. These will count for grades in the respective subject areas. (You can even try for AR points!) The number in parentheses is the AR reading level.
• Religious Studies Look up and read the following scripture passages, then determine which sacrament is being described by using the sacrament definitions below. Be prepared for a general discussion and written quiz. John 1:29-34 Luke 17:1-4 Hebrews 4:14 Matthew 26:26-30 Acts: 2:1-4 Matthew 19:4-12 Mark 1:29-30
Baptism – the sacrament in which we are freed from sin, become children of God, and are welcomed into the church Confirmation – the sacrament in which we receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit in a special way Eucharist – the sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ, Jesus is truly present under the appearances of bread and wine Reconciliation – the sacrament by which our relationship with God and the Church is strengthened or restored and out sins are forgiven Anointing of the Sick – the sacrament by which God’s grace and comfort are given to those who are seriously ill or suffering because of their old age Holy Orders – the sacrament in which men are ordained to serve the Church as deacons, priests, and bishops Matrimony – the sacrament in which a man and woman become husband and wife and promise to be faithful to each other for the rest of their lives.
• Language Arts Please read ONE from the following choices:
My Side of the Mountain (5.2) OR The Bridge to Terabithia (4.6) by Jean Craighead George by Katherine Paterson
• Math It is extremely important to maintain your math skills over the summer. Please continue practicing your math facts. Here are some really good websites that have games to make your practice more enjoyable:
multiplication.com coolmath.com aplusmath.com (also has worksheets for drill practice) funbrain.com/math/index.html sheppardsoftware.com/math.htm arcademicskillbuilders.com/ Over
• Social Studies Please read ONE from the following choices:
United Tates of America (4.4) OR Wild Man Island (5.1) OR Countdown (4.6 by Paula Danziger by Will Hobbs by Ben Mikaelsen
OR Williwaw (5.7) OR Journey to the River Sea by Tom Bodett by Eva Ibbotson
Then choose ONE of the following projects:
1. Make a diorama. Take any old box you have around and build a scene from the book. Use toys, clay, grass, dirt, whatever is handy to build the scenery, and of course, draw or paint the background. Then write a short paragraph or two or three telling about this scene. 2. Do a monologue. Pretend to be a character from the book. Tell the story. You can do this aloud or on paper. If you pick someone other than the main character, you may find the story looks different from your eyes than it does to the main character. After all, the bad guy might not see himself as being so bad! 3. Make a mural showing scenes from the book with captions to show us what the picture is about. 4. Take the most compelling images and/or metaphors from the novel and create an advertisement for a targeted audience. It may be for a magazine, newspaper, billboard or television ad. 5. Movie previews always offer a quick sequence of the best moments that make us want to watch it; create a storyboard or video and narrate the scenes for your preview.
